چکیده

Due to gravitational instability, an initially Gaussian density field develops non-Gaussian features as the Universe evolves. The most prominent nonGaussian features are massive haloes, visible as clusters of galaxies. The distortion of high-redshift galaxy images due to the tidal gravitational field of the large-scale matter distribution, called cosmic shear, can be used to investigate the statistical properties of the LSS. In particular, non-Gaussian properties of the LSS will lead to a non-Gaussian distribution of cosmic-shear statistics. The aperture mass (Map) statistics, recently introduced as a measure for cosmic shear, is particularly well suited for measuring these non-Gaussian properties. In this paper we calculate the highly non-Gaussian tail of the aperture mass probability distribution, assuming Press-Schechter theory for the halo abundance and the ‘universal’ density profile of haloes as obtained from numerical simulations. We find that for values of Map much larger than its dispersion, this probability distribution is closely approximated by an exponential, rather than a Gaussian. We determine the amplitude and shape of this exponential for various cosmological models and aperture sizes, and show that wide-field imaging surveys can be used to distinguish between some of the currently most popular cosmogonies. Our study here is complementary to earlier cosmic-shear investigations which focussed more on two-point statistical properties.

The Kurtosis of the Cosmic Shear Field

We study the fourth-order moment of the cosmic shear field using the dark matter halo approach to describe the nonlinear gravitational evolution of structure in the universe. Since the third-order moment of the shear field vanishes because of symmetry, non-Gaussian signatures in its one-point statistics emerge at the fourth-order level. We argue that the shear kurtosis parameter Sγ,4 ≡ 〈γ i 〉c/...

The three-point correlation function of cosmic shear. II: Relation to the bispectrum of the projected mass density and generalized third-order aperture measures

Abstract. Cosmic shear, the distortion of images of high-redshift sources by the intervening inhomogeneous matter distribution in the Universe, has become one of the essential tools for observational cosmology, since it was first measured in 2000. Since then, several surveys have been conducted and analyzed in terms of second-order shear statistics. Current surveys are on the verge of providing...

Cosmological models discrimination with Weak Lensing

Weak gravitational lensing provides a unique method to map directly the dark matter in the Universe. The majority of lensing analyses uses the two-point statistics of the cosmic shear field to constrain the cosmological model yielding degeneracies, such as that between σ8 and Ωm, respectively the r.m.s. of the mass fluctuations at a scale of 8Mpc/h and the matter density parameter both at z = 0...

Generating Non-Gaussian Adiabatic Fluctuations from Inflation

As the quality of cosmological data continue to improve, it is natural to test the statistics of primordial fluctuations: are they Gaussian or non-Gaussian? I review a model which generates non-Gaussian adiabatic fluctuations from inflation. Current investigations suggest that there may possibly be a non-Gaussian signal in large angle cosmic microwave background anisotropy data. Statistics of m...

Analysis of two - point statistics of cosmic shear III . Covariances of shear measures made easy

Aims. In recent years cosmic shear, the weak gravitational lensing effect by the large-scale structure of the Universe, has proven to be one of the observational pillars on which the cosmological concordance model is founded. Several cosmic shear statistics have been developed in order to analyze data from surveys. For the covariances of the prevalent second-order measures we present simple and...
